Importer Identification Requirements Under the CRA

What Article 19 requires EU importers to place on CRA-covered products or accompanying materials, including name, postal address and digital contact information.

IN BRIEF

Importer identification is part of CRA market traceability. It should identify the actual EU importing legal entity clearly enough for users and authorities to contact it and should remain consistent across packaging, declarations and market-access records.

01 / 07

Importer Identification Is an Express Article 19 Duty

Article 19(4) requires the importer to provide its identity and contact information. This is separate from the manufacturer's identification obligations and helps authorities identify the EU market-entry operator.

02 / 07

Identify the Legal Importer

Use the legal entity that actually meets the CRA importer definition rather than a generic brand or logistics provider that is not the importing economic operator.

03 / 07

Provide Postal and Digital Contact Information

The required information includes a postal address and email address or other digital contact. Where applicable, the importer website is also included. Contact channels should remain monitored and usable.

04 / 07

Use the Product, Packaging or Accompanying Document as Allowed

The Regulation allows importer identification to be provided through the permitted presentation routes. Market-access teams should define one controlled approach appropriate to the product form and supply model.

05 / 07

Do Not Obscure Manufacturer Information

Importer identification should not hide or replace the manufacturer information or required safety and user information. Both roles need to remain distinguishable where both apply.

06 / 07

Keep Identity Consistent Across Compliance Records

The importer named on the product or packaging should match the entity recorded in market-access files, contracts and authority-response procedures. Inconsistent company names can make traceability harder.

07 / 07

Update Identification When the Importer Changes

If the importing legal entity changes, update product and supply-chain processes so new market placements carry the correct importer information. Historical records should preserve which importer handled earlier products.
